Reasonably Distracted

About

I love games. Board games, card games, made-up games, sports. My kids do too, and now they play on Chromebooks and phones, where most free games are ads with a game attached.

This site is my version: clean, simple takes on the games I liked and the ones they like. Not everything for everyone. A short menu, built one game at a time.

What a game is here

A game has a beginning, a story or a goal, and an end. You finish one and maybe want more. Good. No endless modes, no streaks, no “come back tomorrow”.

What this site doesn’t do

It doesn’t track you. It doesn’t show ads. The only things it remembers are your username, how you signed in, where you’re up to in each game, and your notes if you write any, so you can pick up where you left off. You don’t need an account to play.

AI

AI is best used to help people. It isn’t your friend, and talking to it is not a good way to spend your life. It has its uses: it can take a chess engine’s suggested move and present it in a nicer, funnier way, or explain why the sky is blue. Here it works for you, not on you, and it never nudges you to keep playing.

Money

Running this costs a few dollars a month. If it ever needs more, I’ll ask for a coffee a month. That’s it.

Inspirations

lofiandgames.com, old-school Nintendo, lichess, Simon Tatham’s puzzles, Calvin and Hobbes, and the Culture novels the name nods to.
